I live on the US East Coast. Sometimes I get angry at things. I am Chinese, but I cannot read kanji well. |
I have reason to doubt the legitimacy of the comic book guy on 8chan. If he knew his shit, he’d have known that the “Guardians of the Galaxy” #1 sales boost was due to the crazy number of variant covers, not because of LootCrate. “Rocket Racoon” #1 had high numbers because of LootCrate, but that was this year, and not in 2013. (His paranoia regarding comic books as a trend seems unwarranted as well, but that’s a subjective matter.)
I don’t even know what lootcrate is.
And yeah, it is possible the guy is just spinning a tale.
But the tale seems to be one of society’s current direction anyway.
There used to be a saying on littlegreenfootballs when CBS got caught using a memo typed up in MS Word 97 that was supposed to be some Vietnam era memo of how George W. Bush was given a free pass out of any risky wartime activity in the air force.
The saying was “fake but accurate.” It was meant to make fun of how CBS defended the memo, that it was falsified, but it was (apparently) a recreation of an actual memo that gave W a pass to puss out of Vietnam or whatever.
When I think about that /co/ post, considering the idea that it’s fictional, I think, “fake but accurate.”
It does make some pretty strong claims of course, that the heads of the comic book industry fully support blacklisting artists, full on screaming McCarthy style. That those people in power brag openly about how they enjoy ending the career of a creator that isn’t in favor of fair trade coffee or whatever trendy politically safe cause is hot at the moment. If that stuff isn’t true, then maybe the comic industry isn’t quite the same as I suspect it is.
Here’s the ask boxes of Brandon Graham and Brian Michael Bendis though. Maybe you can ask them if that’s what it’s like. Not that they’d be at liberty to admit it if it were true.

The strict guidelines of the CCA essentially killed all comic genres other than capes, westerns, and romance comics. You’re on the ball about Diamond. Comics can and will always have personal biases; just look at Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Strikes Again”. For underground comic inspirations, try the classics (Harvey Pekar, R. Crumb) alongside the modern indie wave (Simon Hanselmann, Frank Santoro).
Just wanted to point out (again) that the post you’re referring to was a submission.
Blame tumblr for not making that evident.
Not that I disagreed in any way with that post, just that it wasn’t for “us” being on the ball about Diamond.
The fact that Diamond distributes ALL comics confuses me and creeps me out. You mean there’s a business out there that has no competition? At all? And they’re not transparent? From what I hear, they can’t even accurately tell how many comics sell EXCEPT through what Diamond says they ship to what stores or whatever the fuck ever. It’s like the MPAA being able to decide what movies the populace can and can’t watch oh…………
We need to get rid of Diamond.
